Istanbul to Edirne by Rental Car: Route, Timing and a Day Plan

How long does it take to drive from Istanbul to Edirne?

Roughly 230 kilometres and about two and a half to three hours, using the O-3 motorway (the Edirne–Istanbul leg of the TEM) west out of the city. It is one of the easiest long drives out of Istanbul: motorway for almost the entire distance, flat terrain, and no city traffic once you are past the western suburbs.

These are planning figures — check live traffic for your day, especially leaving Istanbul.

The route

West on the O-3. The motorway runs from Istanbul through Thrace to Edirne, close to the Greek and Bulgarian borders. It is tolled and uses HGS, Turkey's electronic toll system, so there is no cash lane to join. Confirm at booking how the HGS tag on your car is handled and how toll usage is billed — our HGS and tolls guide explains the system.

The alternative is the older D-100, which passes through towns and is slower. Take it only if you want the stops.

Why Edirne is worth the drive

Edirne was an Ottoman capital before Istanbul, and it still carries the architecture of that period:

  • The Selimiye Mosque, Mimar Sinan's masterpiece and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, inscribed in 2011. It is the reason most people make the trip.
  • The Old Mosque and the Üç Şerefeli Mosque, both central and walkable from the Selimiye.
  • The historic bazaars, including the Ali Paşa Covered Bazaar.
  • The Meriç and Tunca bridges, Ottoman stone bridges on the rivers west of the centre — a short drive and a good end to the afternoon.

A realistic day plan

TimePlan
Leave Istanbul by 08:00Beats the worst of the western suburbs
10:30–11:00 arrivePark centrally and walk
Late morningSelimiye Mosque and its surroundings
LunchEdirne is known for its fried liver (ciğer); the centre is full of options
AfternoonOld Mosque, bazaars, then drive out to the river bridges
Leave by 16:30–17:00Back in Istanbul before the evening peak builds

A day trip works. An overnight works better if you want the bridges at golden hour without watching the clock.

Parking and driving in Edirne

The centre is compact and far easier than Istanbul. Park once near the centre and walk between the mosques and bazaars; everything central is within a short walk. The river bridges are the one place worth taking the car out to.

What to confirm before you go

  • Mileage. The round trip is roughly 460 km. The published allowance is 150 km per day and 3,500 km per month, with extra kilometres at $0.10 or $0.20 in Turkey, so ask whether the allowance is counted per day or pooled.
  • Tolls. How HGS is recorded and billed on your rental.
  • Fuel policy and the fuel level at pickup.
  • Do not plan to cross a border. The published booking rule is that pickup and return must be in the same country, and taking a Turkish rental abroad is a separate question — see can you take a Turkish rental car abroad.

Is a rental the right way to do this?

Yes, more than for most Istanbul day trips. Edirne is well served by intercity buses, but the parts that make the day — the river bridges, an unhurried lunch, leaving when you want — are exactly what a car adds. For the alternatives, see rent a car or take a bus, train or flight between Turkish cities.

Auris online booking lists Istanbul Airport (IST) and Sabiha Gökçen (SAW), and online bookings require at least 3 rental days. Start on the Istanbul car rental page or the Turkey rental page.
