Istanbul to Trabzon by Rental Car: The Long Black Sea Drive

How long does it take to drive from Istanbul to Trabzon?

Roughly 1,050 to 1,100 kilometres, and about 13 to 15 hours of driving. That is not a one-day trip in any honest sense — plan two days with an overnight, or treat the journey itself as part of the holiday with stops along the coast.

Planning figures. Check live conditions, and add margin in winter.

Two routes, two different trips

RouteRoughlyCharacter
Coastal — Istanbul, Samsun, Ordu, Giresun, Trabzon on the Black Sea highway1,050–1,100 kmSea on your left most of the way; towns, tea country, more stops
Inland — via Ankara and Amasya, joining the coast laterSimilar distanceFaster motorway sections, less scenery, fewer towns

Most people who are making the drive once should take the coastal route. The inland route makes sense if your priority is getting there and you are breaking the journey in Ankara anyway — see Istanbul to Ankara.

Both are tolled in sections and use HGS.

Where to break the drive

OvernightPositionWhy
SamsunRoughly two-thirdsThe standard split; a real city with everything you need
OrduFurther alongShorter second day, good coastal setting
Amasya (inland)About halfwayOttoman houses on the river; the most interesting overnight of the three

Driving the whole distance in one push is the mistake people regret. Fifteen hours at the wheel ends with the last two hours being the worst two.

What the drive is actually like

  • The coastal highway is good road, but it passes through and around towns, so average speeds are lower than a pure motorway.
  • Tunnels are frequent on the eastern stretches.
  • Rain is common on the Black Sea coast in any season. Expect wet surfaces, and leave more space than you would inland.
  • Tea and hazelnut country starts in earnest around Giresun; the landscape is the reason to take this route.
  • Fuel and service stops are frequent on the coastal road, less so on the inland mountain sections.

Once you are in Trabzon

A car is genuinely useful in the region, not just for getting there. The highlands behind the city — Uzungöl, the Sümela Monastery, the yayla roads — are where the trip pays off, and they are awkward without a vehicle. Our Trabzon car rental guide covers the local driving in detail, and the Black Sea coast road trip guide covers the coast itself.

Note the mountain roads are winding, often wet, and in winter can need caution or chains. See winter driving in Turkey.

Mileage: do this sum before you book

A round trip is roughly 2,100 to 2,200 kilometres before any driving in the region. The published allowance is 150 km per day and 3,500 km per month, with extra kilometres at $0.10 or $0.20 in Turkey.

That means a ten-day booking at 150 km per day is 1,500 km if counted daily — well under the drive alone. Ask explicitly whether the allowance is per day or pooled across the rental, and budget for extra kilometres rather than discovering them at the end. How to calculate a Turkey road trip cost sets out the method.

Should you drive at all?

Be honest. If Trabzon and the highlands are the whole trip and you have a week or less, flying and renting locally is usually the better plan — about an hour and a half in the air against two days each way. Drive if the coast itself is what you came for, or if you are travelling with family and luggage and want the car throughout.

Auris online booking lists Istanbul Airport (IST) and Sabiha Gökçen (SAW), with at least 3 rental days, a minimum driver age of 25, and a $200 or $300 deposit. Start on the Turkey rental page.

Frequently Asked Questions

How far is Trabzon from Istanbul by car?

Roughly 1,050 to 1,100 kilometres and about 13 to 15 hours of driving. It is a two-day drive with an overnight, not a one-day trip.

Should I take the coastal or the inland route?

Take the coastal route via Samsun, Ordu and Giresun if you are doing the drive once — the landscape is the point. The inland route via Ankara and Amasya suits getting there faster.

Where should I stop overnight?

Samsun at roughly two-thirds is the standard split. Ordu leaves a shorter second day, and Amasya on the inland route is the most interesting overnight of the three.

Will the mileage allowance cover an Istanbul–Trabzon trip?

The round trip alone is roughly 2,100–2,200 km. The published allowance is 150 km per day and 3,500 km per month, so ask whether it is per day or pooled and budget for extra kilometres.

Is it better to fly to Trabzon and rent there?

Usually yes if you have a week or less and the highlands are the trip — about an hour and a half in the air against two days each way. Drive if the Black Sea coast itself is what you came for.
