How long does it take to drive from Istanbul to Uludağ?
Istanbul to Bursa is roughly 155 kilometres and about two to two and a half hours via the Osmangazi Bridge on the O-5. From Bursa, the mountain road up to Uludağ adds roughly 35 kilometres and another 45 to 60 minutes — longer in snow. Allow three to four hours door to door, and more on a winter weekend.
Planning figures. In snow season, treat every estimate as optimistic.
Why Uludağ, and when
Uludağ is the nearest place to Istanbul where you will reliably find deep snow in season, which is why it fills up with families on winter weekends. It also works out of season as a cool, green mountain escape, with the Bursa cable car as a car-free alternative to the drive up.
| Season | What it is |
|---|---|
| December–March | Snow season: skiing, sledging, snow for children |
| April–May | Thaw, green, quiet; the road is easy |
| June–September | Cool mountain air, a relief from Istanbul heat |
| October–November | Autumn colour, very quiet |
The drive in two parts
Part one — Istanbul to Bursa. Motorway, tolled, HGS throughout, crossing the Sea of Marmara on the Osmangazi Bridge. Straightforward in any weather. Our Istanbul to Bursa guide covers this leg, including the ferry alternative.
Part two — Bursa up to Uludağ. This is the part that needs respect: a climbing mountain road with switchbacks, which in winter can be snow-covered, icy in shade and busy with inexperienced drivers. It is not technically difficult in good conditions. In snow it is a different road.
The winter questions to ask before you book
Ask these explicitly, and get the answers in writing:
1. Is the car fitted with winter tyres? Do not assume it for a mountain trip.
2. Are snow chains provided, and are you expected to fit them yourself?
3. What are you permitted to do if the road authority requires chains on the day?
4. What happens if you get stuck — how roadside support works on a mountain road.
5. What the rental conditions say about driving in snow conditions.
Our winter driving in Turkey guide covers the tyre rules and the practical side; read it before this trip rather than after. Requirements can change and may be applied locally, so check the current position for your travel dates rather than relying on an article.
Planning the day
| Time | Plan |
|---|---|
| Leave Istanbul 06:30–07:00 | Essential on a winter weekend; the mountain road and the car parks both fill |
| 09:00–09:30 Bursa | Fuel up here, not on the mountain |
| 10:00–10:30 Uludağ | Park in the official areas at the top |
| Day | Snow, skiing, sledging, lunch |
| Leave by 15:30 | Descend in daylight, before the surface refreezes |
Descend in daylight. That single rule matters more than everything else on this list. The road that was wet slush at noon can be ice at dusk.
If you would rather not drive the mountain
Two honest alternatives:
- Drive to Bursa, take the cable car up. You keep the car for the city and the drive home, and skip the mountain road entirely. A good choice for a first visit in deep winter.
- Stay in Bursa and go up for one day. Bursa has far more accommodation, and a night there turns a tiring day trip into a comfortable weekend.
Practical notes
- Warm, waterproof clothing and real footwear. The car park at the top is not a place for city shoes.
- Keep the fuel tank well above half on the mountain.
- Expect no phone signal in places — download offline maps.
- Mileage. The round trip is roughly 380 km. The published allowance is 150 km per day and 3,500 km per month, with extra kilometres at $0.10 or $0.20 in Turkey, so ask whether it is counted per day or pooled.
- Peak dates. Winter weekends and school holidays are busy; see renting during peak season and public holidays and Bayram.
Auris online booking lists Istanbul Airport (IST) and Sabiha Gökçen (SAW), with at least 3 rental days and a minimum driver age of 25. Start on the Turkey rental page or the Istanbul car rental page.
