Crossing the Bosphorus by Car: Bridges, Eurasia Tunnel and HGS

How can you cross the Bosphorus by car?

By bridge or by tunnel. The 15 July Martyrs Bridge and Fatih Sultan Mehmet Bridge are the central crossings, the Yavuz Sultan Selim Bridge on the O-7 motorway is the northern one, and the Eurasia Tunnel links Kazlıçeşme to Göztepe in the south. All are tolled and use HGS.

Marmaray is a train, not a road crossing, so a rental car cannot use it.

Which crossing suits which trip?

The central bridges are the shortest in distance, but the queues can wipe out that advantage. The right choice depends on where you start and finish. Use live traffic in your navigation app.

How does HGS work on these crossings?

HGS is Turkey's electronic toll system. The toll is recorded as you pass, without stopping. Rental cars in Turkey normally carry an HGS device or sticker, but how it is issued and how your tolls are billed depends on the rental company. Ask before you drive and check the rental agreement. Our HGS and tolls guide covers the system in more detail.

Toll amounts change. Look at the current tariff from the operator or KGM rather than trusting a number in an article.

What about the Osmangazi Bridge and other big bridges?

The Osmangazi Bridge is on the O-5 motorway (Gebze to Orhangazi to İzmir) and shortens trips towards Bursa and İzmir. It is separate from the Bosphorus crossings. Compare it with the ferry and read our Istanbul to Bursa guide. For the Dardanelles, see Istanbul to Çanakkale by car.

How do you choose in practice?

Ask three questions:

  • Where are you starting and finishing? Airport to Asian side often suits the Yavuz Sultan Selim Bridge and O-7.
  • What time is it? At rush hour any central bridge is slow. Check live traffic before you commit.
  • Do you need to cross at all? Sometimes a ferry or staying on one side of the city is faster.

The Istanbul Airport to city guide and the Sabiha Gökçen to Taksim guide work through common airport routes. For airport service pages, see Istanbul Airport car rental and Sabiha Gökçen car rental.

When does Bosphorus traffic peak?

Peaks are usually in the morning and evening rush hours, roughly 7:00 to 9:30 and 17:00 to 20:30, and they can extend on Fridays and before holidays. Morning traffic often flows towards the European side and evening traffic back towards the Asian side, but conditions vary daily.

Check live traffic before every crossing and be ready to switch route. If your schedule is flexible, cross mid-morning or after the evening peak.

What should you confirm with the rental company?

  • How tolls are billed at the end of the rental.
  • Whether the HGS device is fitted and working.
  • What happens if a toll is missed and who pays any administration fee.

The rental conditions page lists what Auris currently publishes.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many ways are there to cross the Bosphorus by car?

Four road crossings: the 15 July Martyrs Bridge, Fatih Sultan Mehmet Bridge, the Yavuz Sultan Selim Bridge on the O-7 motorway, and the Eurasia Tunnel. All are tolled and use HGS.

Can a rental car use Marmaray?

No. Marmaray is a rail crossing. Cars must use a bridge or the Eurasia Tunnel.

Which crossing is best from Istanbul Airport to the Asian side?

Often the Yavuz Sultan Selim Bridge on the O-7, because it is on the way. Compare with live traffic, since the best route changes through the day.

How are tolls paid on a rental car in Istanbul?

Through HGS. How the device is issued and how tolls are billed depends on the rental company, so confirm both and read the rental agreement.

Are toll prices fixed?

No, tariffs change. Check the current rates from the operator or KGM rather than relying on a figure in an article.
