Payment is one of the most practical questions travellers ask about renting a car in Turkey, and a little clarity upfront prevents awkward moments at handover. How you pay, what card you need, and how the deposit hold works all matter. This guide explains the whole picture so you arrive prepared and pay with confidence.
The Credit Card Is the Key Document
In car rental almost everywhere, including Turkey, a credit card in the main driver's name is the central requirement. It is needed not just to pay, but to hold the refundable security deposit. The card must usually be in the name of the person whose licence and contract are on file — the main driver — because the deposit and any liability are tied to that person.
If you only have a debit card, tell us when you book. Policies on debit cards vary and some products or deposit levels may not be available on debit, so it is far better to confirm in advance than to discover a limitation at the counter.
How the Deposit Hold Works
The deposit is not a payment — it is a temporary hold (pre-authorisation) placed on your credit card. The amount depends on the car: economy cars carry a smaller hold, premium and luxury cars a larger one, reflecting their value. During the rental, that amount is reserved but not charged. After you return the car in good order, the hold is released.
Timing of the release
The release is requested promptly on a clean return, but how quickly the funds free up on your statement depends on your own bank — sometimes immediate, sometimes a few business days. This is normal and outside the rental company's control. Knowing this in advance saves unnecessary worry.
Cash: What It Can and Cannot Do
Cash can often be used toward the rental fee itself, but it generally cannot replace the credit card for the deposit hold. A pre-authorisation requires a card; cash cannot be pre-authorised and released the same way. So even if you intend to pay the rental in cash, you will typically still need a credit card present for the security hold. Always confirm the exact policy with us when booking so there are no surprises.
Whose Name Must Be on the Card and Licence?
The main driver named on the contract should hold the licence and the credit card used for the deposit. If a different person will pay, mention it at booking — it can sometimes be arranged, but it must be agreed in advance, not improvised at handover, because the liability and the deposit are linked to the documented driver.
What to Bring to Pay Smoothly
- A credit card in the main driver's name, with enough available limit to cover the deposit hold plus the rental.
- The main driver's valid licence and passport or ID.
- Your booking reference.
- If relevant, a note of any debit-card or alternative-payment arrangement you confirmed in advance.
Bring these and the payment step at handover takes moments.
Avoiding Payment Surprises
A few simple habits keep payment clean. Make sure your card has enough available limit for the deposit hold on top of the rental cost — a low limit can cause the hold to fail. Tell your bank you will be using the card abroad so it is not blocked for unusual activity. Keep all receipts. And confirm with us in advance if your situation is non-standard — debit only, a different payer, or a very large deposit on a premium car. We would always rather sort it before you arrive.
The Auris Approach
We are transparent about payment and deposits before you book, not after. Tell us how you intend to pay and we will confirm exactly what you need, so handover is quick and there is nothing to surprise you.
