Damascus to Bosra by Car: Planning a Day in the South

How far is Bosra from Damascus?

Roughly 140 kilometres south, usually around two hours each way. That makes Bosra a full day rather than a half day: four hours on the road, plus the time you want on site.

Why Bosra?

Bosra's Roman theatre is one of the best preserved in the world, built in black basalt and later enclosed inside a fortress, which is part of why it survived so well. The old town around it, also basalt, is on the UNESCO World Heritage list. Nothing else in southern Syria compares, and it is the reason most visitors make this drive.

Check conditions in the south before you commit

Southern Syria has had a different security picture from Damascus at various points in recent years. Conditions change, and a guide written today cannot promise what the road is like the week you travel. Before you plan the day:

  • Check current travel advice from your own government and from a reliable local source.
  • Ask the Auris team when you book. Tell them your route so the rental is set up for it, and if they advise against a particular day or road, take it seriously.
  • Have a plan B. If the south is not the right call that week, Maaloula, Bloudan, or the M5 north are all good alternatives.

Shaping the day

1. Leave Damascus early, ideally before the morning rush.

2. Drive south on the main highway towards Daraa, then east to Bosra.

3. Spend the middle of the day at the theatre and old town. Park once, walk.

4. Leave Bosra with plenty of daylight to get back to Damascus before dark.

Two hours of driving each way on a mostly straight road is tiring in a different way from a mountain road. Swap drivers if you can, and stop once on the way back.

Practical points

  • Fuel: fill up in Damascus and keep the tank well above half. Do not plan around finding a station near Bosra.
  • Water and shade: the south is open and hot in summer, and the basalt holds the heat. Spring and autumn are much kinder.
  • Navigation: download offline maps before you leave — see our Syria navigation guide.
  • Documents: carry your licence, passport and the rental papers. Our documents guide covers what to have with you.

What to settle with the rental

  • Mileage. A round trip of roughly 280 km is above the published 150 km daily allowance for a single day. The allowance is 150 km/day and 3,500 km/month, with extra kilometres at $1 in Syria, so ask how it is counted across your whole booking — on a multi-day rental with quiet city days, it often balances out.
  • Your route. Say up front that you plan to drive south.
  • What happens if something goes wrong on the road — see our roadside support guide.

Self-drive or driver?

For a first trip to the south, a car with a driver who knows the road is a reasonable choice, and it takes the four hours of driving off your hands. See our private driver comparison.
