Where is Hama, and how far is it?
Hama sits on the Orontes river in central Syria, directly on the M5 highway between Damascus and Aleppo:
| From | Distance | Usual drive |
|---|---|---|
| Damascus | ~210 km | 2.5–3 hours |
| Homs | ~45–50 km | under an hour |
| Aleppo | ~145 km | about 2 hours |
These are planning figures. That position on the M5 is the key to planning Hama: for most visitors it is a stop on the way, not a separate trip.
Why stop at Hama?
The norias. Hama's giant wooden water wheels have been lifting water from the Orontes for centuries, and several still turn beside the river in the city centre. The sound — a low, constant groan of wood on wood — is the thing people remember. The riverside gardens around them make a good long lunch stop.
Three ways to fit Hama in
1. As a stop on the M5. If you are driving between Damascus and Aleppo, Hama is the natural break. Our M5 drive guide has the full route; adding Hama turns a long drive into a good day.
2. As a day trip from Aleppo. About two hours each way. Very doable, especially combined with a stop at the ancient site of Apamea north-west of Hama if conditions allow.
3. As a day trip from Damascus. Possible but long — five to six hours of driving in a day. Most people do better staying a night in Hama or Homs, or folding it into the M5 drive.
Parking and the city centre
The norias are in the middle of the city, along the river. Park once near the centre and walk. Driving along the riverside looking for the perfect space is the slow option.
What to settle with the rental
- Mileage. The published allowance is 150 km/day and 3,500 km/month, extra kilometres $1 in Syria. A Damascus–Hama round trip (~420 km) is well above one day's allowance; an Aleppo–Hama round trip (~290 km) is also above it. Ask how the allowance is counted across your booking.
- Pickup and return. Auris rents in Damascus and Aleppo. Do not assume you can pick up in one city and return in the other — ask what is possible before you plan a one-way trip.
- Your route. Tell the team you plan intercity driving.
Practical tips
- Fill up in the city you leave, not on the highway.
- Drive the M5 in daylight.
- Summer is hot in the Orontes valley. Morning arrival and a shaded lunch by the river work well.
Book from the Damascus car rental page or the Aleppo car rental page, depending on where your trip starts. If you are driving from Aleppo, our Aleppo to Homs guide covers the same stretch of road.
Frequently Asked Questions
How far is Hama from Damascus?
About 210 kilometres on the M5, usually two and a half to three hours.
How far is Hama from Aleppo?
About 145 kilometres, roughly two hours by car.
Is Hama better as a day trip or a stop on the M5?
For most visitors, a stop. Hama sits directly on the M5 between Damascus and Aleppo, so it naturally breaks that drive. From Aleppo, a day trip is easy; from Damascus it is long.
Can I pick up a car in Damascus and return it in Aleppo?
Do not assume it. Auris rents in both cities, but ask what one-way arrangements are possible before you plan around one.
