Car Rental Deposit Guide: What Customers Should Know

The rental car deposit is one of the most frequently misunderstood parts of the rental process. Customers sometimes arrive expecting a straightforward transaction and are surprised to find a significant hold placed on their credit card. Understanding how deposits work removes the surprise and helps you plan your finances appropriately.

What Is a Rental Car Deposit?

A rental car deposit — also called a security deposit or pre-authorization — is a temporary hold placed on your credit card at the time of vehicle pickup. It is not a charge. The money does not leave your account in the traditional sense; instead, your card issuer reduces your available credit by the deposit amount and holds it in reserve while your rental is active.

If you return the car in the agreed condition, with the correct fuel level, and without additional services, the hold is released and your full credit limit becomes available again.

How Much Is the Deposit?

Deposit amounts vary by vehicle class and rental company policy. As a general guide:

  • Compact and economy vehicles: typically 200–300 USD equivalent
  • Midsize sedans: typically 300–400 USD equivalent
  • SUVs and premium vehicles: typically 400–600 USD equivalent

These figures are approximate and will be confirmed at time of booking with Auris Cars. The deposit is held in the local currency (Turkish Lira in Turkey) at the prevailing exchange rate.

Pre-Authorization vs Actual Charge

There is an important difference between a pre-authorization (a hold) and an actual charge. A pre-authorization is temporary and is released after the rental ends — usually within 3 to 7 business days, depending on your bank's processing time. An actual charge occurs only if there is a billable event: additional days, fuel shortfall, or documented damage.

Your bank statement may show the pre-authorization as a pending transaction during your rental. This is normal.

Can I Use a Debit Card?

Debit cards are generally not accepted for the security deposit, even if they carry a Visa or Mastercard logo. This is because the pre-authorization mechanism works differently for debit cards and directly removes funds from your bank account rather than reducing available credit. Most professional rental companies, including Auris Cars, require a credit card in the renter's name for the deposit.

What Affects the Deposit Release?

The deposit is released promptly when:

  • The car is returned on time and to the agreed location
  • Fuel level matches the pickup level
  • No new damage is identified at return
  • No outstanding charges remain on the rental

If any of these conditions are not met, the relevant charges are deducted from the deposit and the remainder is released.

Communication Is Key

If you have any questions about the deposit amount, timing of release, or anything related to your billing, contact Auris Cars directly via WhatsApp. Transparent communication before and during your rental ensures there are no surprises. Renting a car should be simple — and at Auris Cars, it is.
